Besides being a pretty decent movie starring Val Kilmer, the Salton Sea is also a real places about 3 hours east of San Diego. It was created through mismanagement of water resources back in the 20's. It became a vacation mecca in the 1950's, but lately it has been drying up. With the falling water table and rising salt levels, the sea has become toxic to most life, and thousands upon thousands of dead fish line the coastlines. (You can't imagine the smell.) Sad, but also totally fascinating!
